Founded in 2012, Solid Material Solutions (SMS) started by providing technical development assistance to companies on their development of both high and standard “low” temperature superconductors. SMS also provided services to businesses beset with challenges of setting up, and scaling up a variety of complex pilot production lines, as well as improving product yield.
Shortly afterward, SMS initiated development of its own high temperature superconductors (HTS), specifically targeting never before realized strong round and rectangular HTS wires, as well as their low-loss cabled forms, that are applicable to coil and magnets systems where currently available HTS tapes are problematic to use.
SMS now develops and manufactures prototype strong HTS round and rectangular wires, cables, and coils that surpass the capabilities of low-temperature superconductors (LTS) and HTS tapes for some types of advanced field-generating magnets.
These were invented by Solid Material Solutions founder Dr. Alexander Otto. Four U.S. patents* have has been issued that cover the innovative features in SMS’s strong and low ac loss HTS wire and cable products. Dr. Otto is the inventor on 28 additional patents in the field of superconductors, providing a broad base for developing and manufacturing superior, cost-effective superconductor products.
Technical developments by SMS have been supported by several SBIR awards provided by the U.S. Government, as well as by investments from Solid Material Solutions and its founders.
SMS also has active, ongoing programs that are co-funded by development grants from U.S. government agencies such as the National Institute of Health, the Department of Energy and NASA.
Our superconductors are vital for achieving higher performance magnets in very high field molecular Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) imaging, medical Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), particle accelerators, fusion reactor test systems and specialty research instruments, as well as in next-level electric power generation and conversion equipment.
SMS also continues to provide technology development services, as well as consulting, on superconducting materials, as well as more broadly on the development of advanced materials, testing, processes, quality systems, scale up, pilot manufacturing, yield improvement, and product engineering. For each product and service that we provide, our first priority is the success of our customer.
Solid Material Solutions, LLC was founded by Alexander Otto, Ph.D., and Linda Saraco for the creation and commercialization of advanced materials-based products, as well as for providing leading-edge technical and business development services. It is located in Chelmsford, Massachusetts just South of the New Hampshire border.
